The foundation stone for the first underpass connecting
the three platforms in the Kannur railway station was laid by P.K.
Sreemathy, MP, at a function here on Sunday.
The
Railway authorities said that the underpass would be completed by March
2016. The 23-metre long and 4.5-metre wide is estimated to cost Rs. 1.75
crore.
The underpass would be constructed using cut-and-cover method.
Divisional
Railway Manager (DRM - Palakkad) Anand Prakash, who was present at the
function, said that the underpass is designed to provide unhindered and
easy passenger movement between station platforms.
Noting
that the underpass would be a solution to the rush of passengers over
the foot overbridge at the railway station, he said that with the
completion of the underpass as also the works for installing lifts and
escalators, platform accessibility of passengers at the station would be
vastly improved.
The facilities coming up at the
station would also be helpful to differentially-abled people and senior
citizens as also passengers with children and luggage, he added.
The
DRM also said that the installation works of two escalators and lifts
at the platforms had already started. The civil works for installing the
lifts would be completed in February 2016, he added.
A.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, and Kannur Mayor E.P. Latha were among those present at the function.
